Abstract: English literature has undergone significant transformation in response to the cultural, political, technological, and social changes of the modern and contemporary world. From the experimental forms of modernism to the fragmented narratives of postmodernism and the technologically mediated literature of the twenty-first century, English literature has continually adapted itself to changing human experiences. Contemporary writers increasingly explore questions of identity, gender, race, migration, globalization, environmental crisis, technology, memory, and cultural displacement. The boundaries between literary genres have also become increasingly fluid, while digital technologies have introduced new forms of literary production and reception. This paper examines the major developments and characteristics of contemporary English literature, with particular attention to postmodernism, multiculturalism, feminist writing, postcolonial literature, migrant narratives, ecological literature, and digital culture. Writers such as Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, Kazuo Ishiguro, Zadie Smith, Arundhati Roy, Amitav Ghosh, and Ian McEwan demonstrate the diversity and complexity of contemporary literary expression. The paper argues that present-day English literature is characterized by plurality, experimentation, cultural hybridity, and an increasing engagement with global and technological realities.
