Abstract: Sports
programs have become an essential component of modern education as they
contribute significantly to the physical, psychological, social, and
intellectual development of students. While several researchers have
highlighted the positive influence of sports participation on concentration,
discipline, attendance, and cognitive functioning, concerns continue to exist
regarding the possible negative effects of excessive sports involvement on
academic responsibilities.
The present study aimed
to critically analyze the impact of sports programs on the academic performance
of high school students in Delhi. The sample consisted of 100 high school
students, of whom 50 participated in school sports programs and 50 did not.
Academic achievement was assessed through the previous year's examination
results. The data were analyzed using percentages, Mean, Standard Deviation,
and the t-test.
The overall mean
academic achievement score was 59.65 (SD = 10.85). Students participating in
sports programs obtained a higher mean score (M = 61.20, SD = 10.20) than
non-participants (M = 58.10, SD
= 11.50), and the
difference was reported as significant at the 0.05 level (t = 2.40).
Participants also showed a lower proportion of low achievers (20.00%) than
non-participants (27.5%). The study concludes that participation in sports
programs is associated with better academic performance, and that a balanced
integration of sports and academics contributes to the holistic development of
high school students.
