Abstract: The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), introduced on July 29, 2020, represents the first comprehensive education policy of the twenty-first century in India. In a developing nation like India, higher education plays a pivotal role in promoting human development, fostering innovation, and driving socio-economic progress. Since independence, the Indian higher education system has witnessed remarkable expansion, contributing significantly to national development through the dissemination of specialized knowledge and skills.

This study aims to examine the impact of NEP 2020 on the higher education system in India. It critically analyses the existing challenges and issues faced by the sector while also exploring the new opportunities introduced by the policy. NEP 2020 emphasizes the modernization and transformation of higher education by promoting flexibility, multidisciplinary learning, and improved access, thereby aligning the system with global standards.

The policy reflects a progressive vision grounded in contemporary socio-economic realities and demonstrates the potential to address future educational and developmental challenges. If implemented effectively, NEP 2020 has the capacity to significantly strengthen India’s higher education landscape and position the country as a global hub for education by 2030.
