Abstract: This research paper examines the complex historical trajectory of Jammu and Kashmir from ancient times to the contemporary period, exploring how diverse cultural, religious, and political influences have shaped its unique identity. Through a comprehensive analysis of historical sources, archaeological evidence, and contemporary scholarship, this study traces the transformation of the region from a center of Buddhist learning and Vedic culture to its present-day contested status. The research investigates the layers of historical experience that have contributed to the region's consciousness, focusing on the interplay between indigenous traditions, external influences, and political developments that continue to define Kashmiri identity in the modern era.
