Abstract: The history of India’s struggle against British colonialism cannot be understood only through major national movements. Regional and tribal resistance also played an important role in challenging colonial authority. Chhattisgarh, with its large tribal population and rich forest resources, witnessed several movements against exploitation, land alienation, forest restrictions, and oppressive administrative policies. Tribal communities resisted colonial intervention because British rule affected their traditional rights over land, forests, and natural resources. The revolt of Veer Narayan Singh in 1857 became one of the most significant symbols of resistance in Chhattisgarh. Apart from this, different tribal communities continuously opposed external control and the destruction of their traditional social and economic systems. This paper examines the nature, causes, and significance of tribal resistance in Chhattisgarh during the colonial period.
